The way of the cross is a road less travelled. Many pilgrims that started on this way have been subtly fooled out of the way.
The way of the cross remains the same regardless of changing culture and circumstances. It is the way that the saviour walked and all the disciples after him. The missionaries that brought the gospel to Africa came by this same road. They lost wives and children on the way due to sicknesses but they never turned back until they reached the uneducated and unlearned men in Africa. They put aside their sense of civilization and lived among unrefined.
Their concerns weren’t about affluence and relevance but the kingdom of God. Some of the wives of these men gladly stayed back at home to hold the fort and care for the children in the fear of God and submission. These men and women travelled on the way of the cross with few possessions. Those that had much sold them to give to the poor and the needy.
Through the way of the cross, they abandoned the comforts they’d known to sleep on mats. They forsook their earthly inheritances for an incorruptible one. They trusted in God for provisions while some farmed the land to get sustainable. All these men and women travelled on the way of the cross to get to the city of eternal lights.
They endured the shame and reproach and physical pain and sickness because they knew this world and all its gold is not theirs. After the way of the cross, they knew they will get to the destination of their desire.
THE CONSOLATION ALONG THE WAY OF THE CROSS
A place where there will be no tears or sorrow. No conflict or corruption. Their King and Lord will be there. The saints who have gone along the way of the cross before them will be there. They knew if they endured till the end, they will meet their saved loved ones who died along with the praise. On that beautiful shore where regrets won’t matter anymore. Where there will be no fear of oppression or famine. A beautiful city beyond the blue skies, where there will be no need for cryptocurrency.
Their eyes will no longer behold iniquity and the falling away of believers. They acknowledged that if they walk the path of the cross all the way till the end, the beauty of the new Jerusalem will worth all the heartache.
ARE YOU WALKING ON THE SAME ROAD?
Are you walking along the same way that these men of old walked? This is time for deep reflection. You can’t say you are a traveller on this road if you are dragging the love of gold and silver along with you. If you are constantly peering at the large feasting on the broadway. These men walked with integrity and absolute love for the saviour who loved them and died for them.
If your constant desire isn’t about winning souls from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of God, then be cautious of the route you are taking. If your beauty and affluence is all the treasure you have, understand that it won’t be enough to pay your way at the gates of heaven.
Are you walking on this same path that calls for courage and selflessness? The possession of absolute love for God and a piercing love for others. Loving others enough to call them from the merriment of the city of destruction.
It is a road void of idols and greed. Are you walking on the same road?
THE CHANGELESS WAY OF THE CROSS
Civilisation has not changed the contours on the way of the cross. The road is still as it was 2000years ago. The resilient are still the travellers on this road (And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence and the violent take it by force.
Technology is not an excuse. It is still the same old and rugged road. Strewn with the blood and sweat of Saints who have gone before us
THE MIND THEY HAD
The men of old (men like David Living stone who lost all in Africa and yet wouldn’t return to his own country. He later died in a mud hut, kneeling beside his cot in prayer) who walked the way of the cross before we were able to succeed because they constantly set their affections in things above. They accepted that they were pilgrims on a journey. A journey to their real home. A journey back to the gardens of God. They wouldn’t sell their soul for a plate of porridge because they just knew so well that the shinning plate filled with delicacies is nothing compared to the fruit of life.
They armed themselves with the assurance of the embrace of the Lord when He says unto them, welcome home good and faithful servant.
Whether it be life or death, dear saviour, may we never depart from the way of the cross. Though satan buffet us night and day, may we never give in to him. Oh, that we will not branch off to the broadway to get a moment of ease.
Whether riches or poverty, Lord may we not deny you. Keep us trusting in you till the end. Till all of our dreams come true or even if they don’t, we won’t depart from the way that the Saviour walked.
The way of the cross is still a road less travelled. Then and even now. Less and less are travelling. However, for anyone that chooses to walk this narrow way that is void of the love of the world, Jesus promises to be by us. And never to leave or forsake us. We will always hear a voice behind us saying “this is the way walk ye therein.
